About our presenter
Our presenter this month is Tina Heinich. She is a software engineer at NASA Langley Research Center. She has worked on (and still work on) various IT odd jobs since joining, but currently she focuses on building and maintaining web applications (sometimes with a “data science/data visualization twist”). She also serves as a point of contact for data visualization and lead an agency community that aims to let NASA employees feel comfortable learning about data visualization and best practices, no matter their domain or tool know-how.
About her presentation
The title of the presentation is “Lessons Learned from Developing Web-based Data Visualization in NASA”.
The translated version of that is: “I’ve been trying to implement interactive data vis at NASA for several years now, so I’d love to share some tips, the things that have been successful and might be interesting to your group…and the things I have done that you should never ever do, no matter how much your boss asks you to.” Tina Heininch

Astoria Digital is proud to participate in Open Data Week 2021! https://www.open-data.nyc/
As part of Open Data Week 2021, the Astoria Digital team is sharing what they've learned about Freedom of Information Law Requests through a project tracking the FOIL requests to Police Departments in New York State. They are creating a site with rich data visualizations that will serve as a dashboard to track a set of FOIL requests.
This talk aims to engage people who use FOIL requests for their work, and those who have never used Freedom of Information Law requests before and would like to learn. Engineers, designers and those who work with data are welcome to contribute to the conversation about creating a site that visualizes data about FOIL requests.
Presenters:
Ania Stypulkowski (she/her) is a UX and UI designer interested in civic tech. She's based in Queens, New York and has many opinions.
Ash Ryan Arnwine (he/him) is a developer relations leader and JavaScript hacker. His Marvel identity involves 3 parts photography and 7 parts wrangling the feistiest toddler in Astoria, Queens.
Chris DeLuca is a web engineer with 10+ years of professional experience. Fascinated with most things programming, he’s digging into component system architecture right now. One time, he rode a pig.

Astoria Tech (Virtual) Meetup #23 - Goodbye 2020
Astorians!
Congratulations, we've made it. 2020 will soon be in our collective rearview mirror.
It'd be great to say goodbye to the year in-person with neighbors, but those are not the times we live in. So instead, we'll be jumping into a few digital spaces where we can "physically" be with each other.
So come join us to look back, pause, and look forward. ✨
AGENDA:
6:30pm - 7:00pm: Open discussion on Zoom

Astoria Tech (Virtual) Meetup #22 - Containerizing a Node.js app... LIVE!
Hi neighbors! It's going to be a different kind of Thanksgiving holiday this year, so it sure would be nice to kick it off together—virtually, as is the fashion of our time.
One of our Astoria Digital projects is getting closer to launch. On our way to launch, we need to containerize the project!
Here's the fun part: we're going to attempt containerization during the meetup, from a cold start, with no prep in advance.
One of the project developers will be working with one of our resident docker gurus to take a Node.js and React app and put it in a container.
Does the app want to go into a container?? Or will it put us in a container?? We'll find out together! And learn a thing or two about Docker and containers in the process.
Join us on Zoom on Wednesday, November 25 at 6:30pm!

Astoria Tech (Virtual) Meetup #21 - (Spooky) Lightning Talks!
Astorians and friends!
Tonight at 6:30pm is the 21st monthly Astoria Tech Meetup!
We have no scheduled speaker for the evening, so we're going to have a more casual meeting of community discussion. 💬
And to foster some dialogue, we'll be having impromptu lightning talks from you, the community. Anyone who comes is welcome to talk about any tech-related topic for 1-3 minutes.
So go vote early and join us on Zoom for a ghoulish night of spooky tech conversations. 🎃👻

Astoria Tech (Virtual) Meetup #20 - Activism by Tech during the Pandemic
Hey Astorians!
September is here, and fall is upon is. 🍁 So put on a sweater and join us at our next meetup! (From the comfort of your own home, of course.)
We'll start with a few randomized breakout rooms in Zoom (they were a hit last time 🎸). After, we're excited to be hearing from Sunny Ng!
Sunny is a software engineer at Squarespace by day and a transit activist all other times. He's the creator of goodservice.io and the Weekendest, projects that analyze subway performance and help riders navigate the system during planned service changes, respectively.
He'll be talking to us about the projects he launched during the pandemic (https://subwayridership.nyc* and https://nypdcomplaints.com**) after feeling helpless and frustrated by the pandemic and police brutality.
After that, feel free to stick around to discuss the talk and anything else tech or Astoria related after!
See you all there! 🤝

Astoria Tech (Virtual) Meetup #19 - Streamlining with Docker Compose
Hey neighbors!
Long time no talk. It's been a whole 5 months since our last meetup! I'm sure most of us have been holed up at home, living that remote life. But now that things are slowly but surely picking up again, we decided it's time to end our COVID hiatus!
(But still keeping it virtual for now. 💻)
This month, we'll be kicking off our return with a bang. We are excited to have Peter Mckee, a manager on the Developer Relations team at Docker, give a talk on Docker Compose!
Besides that, we'll have breakout rooms on Zoom for everyone to talk to each other about anything and everything tech!
Join us on Zoom on Weds, 8/26 at 6:30pm!
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84977556826?pwd=WjF1TDVaZVZGWE93UTIrTUNocCtsUT09
TALK DESCRIPTION:
We'll take a look at using Docker Compose to help streamline and simplify the development workflow. We'll set up a local development environment that starts all your services and databases with one command. Then we'll take a look at seamlessly shipping your application to the cloud. He'll do this all with the same Docker Compose commands you know and love.
AGENDA:
6:30pm - 7:00pm -- Random breakout rooms
7:00pm - 7:30pm -- "Streamline Your Developer Workflow with Docker Compose" by Peter Mckee
7:30pm - 8:00pm -- Specific breakout rooms
